  • Year 1 Phonics Screening Test w/c 18th June

    Tue 29 May 2012

Phonics Screening Tests will be taking place for every child in Year 1 week commencing Monday 18th June. This is a National scheme which has been piloted over the past two years and is happening throughout the country during that week. The aim is to check that every child will be on target to read by the end of Year 2 and to ensure that every school has a clear idea of what each child requires to achieve that goal. This is not a reading test but an assessment of phonics knowledge and children will be asked to do activities similar to those carried out in every day phonics teaching. They will be asked to sound out a real word and blend the sounds together e.g. c-a-t    cat, and also read nonsense words. Each check will take approximately 10 minutes. There is guidance for this check at the link below and we have included a pdf of the official sample materials from the Department of Education that we would encourage you to read and practise with your child prior to the 18th.

  • PGL Residential - Day 3

    Sun 27 May 2012
The day began slightly chillier but soon warmed up to be another scorcher! We have had abseiling, zip wire, archery (good practice for the Year 5 and 6 production later in the term!), the Matrix and aeroball today so lots of well exercised people! Lunch was a picnic in our chalet area sat in the shade of the trees overlooking the Creek. Money has been spent in the shop and children have been encouraged to start packing ready for departure tomorrow. We will be having bedtime at 2030 tonight as lots of tired people (even if they won't admit it!) and lights out at 2100, ready to rise and shine at 0700 tomorrow morning for our final 2 activities before lunch and departure. Last update tomorrow morning. Sleep well! I know the children will!
  • PGL Residential - Day 2

    Sat 26 May 2012
This morning saw us all walking down to the beach in our wetsuits ready to canoe and kayak. There was quite a strong breeze so it was quite tricky, but some of the children were particularly good whilst others were quite happy to let the breeze blow them along! Everybody managed to get wet of course! After a late lunch we visited the shop quickly before the afternoon's events. This afternoon's activities have included abseiling, The Matrix (but we can't say anymore as we have been sworn to secrecy!!!), sensory trail (which was hilarious and quite muddy) and fencing.
The children are being really excellent in everything they do - cheering each other and encouraging everyone. We have had a delicious dinner and it is free time now - some children are playing, some are chatting, some are showering and some are still playing sport!!
This evening's entertainment is 'Wacky Races', which starts at 1930. Bed will be at 2130 again with lights out at 2200,and I suspect that, what with the fabulously warm weather and the energetic activities we have been doing, along with all the fresh sea air we are getting, there will be lots of people falling asleep as soon as their head hits their pillow! Here's hoping!
    More tomorrow....
  • PGL Residential - Day 1

    Fri 25 May 2012
We had a great journey to Portsmouth with lunch in the sun at Southsea, overlooking the Solent. Upon arrival at PGL the children went with some PGL instructors for a tour and then unpacked. Dinner was at 1735 and all ate well, despite several sweets having been consumed earlier in the day. We returned to the chalets and then had half an hour free time, after which chalet inspections took place. Many points earned for tidy and well organised chalets - a good start! Let's hope it continues! The evening activity is Passport to the World - rather like orienteering around the site, finding countries and clues. The children are loving it, each and every one is happy and there has been the sound of laughter all day long. We will be having a calm down session before bedtime at 2130 and then lights out at 2200. What time we actually get to sleep remains to be seen! More news tomorrow..... breakfast is at 0735 so an early start!

  • The Dassett Historians

    Sun 13 May 2012

In conjunction with the Avon Dassett Local History Group, we have compiled an amazing array of creative writing, offering the reader the opportunity to experience true life events in Fenny Compton, with a creative touch. We did some research into real events that happened in the village circa 1900 and the children then created these pieces. They have great imaginations and have included some elements of what it would have been like to be a child in those times. All of this work has been for the Diamond Jubilee History Book, as mentioned here on 29th April, and all of this sensational work is available to see here in its entirety in the document below and online at the Avon Dassett Parish Council website at the link below.

  • Oh, What a Night!

    Fri 11 May 2012
A fabulous time was had by all at the school discos on Friday evening. Yet another great event organised by The Friends had everyone up and dancing and a massive £262 was raised! Well done to you all.
  • What a Sponsored Sport Event!

    Thu 03 May 2012
Forward rolls, cartwheels, flips and flying through the air over members of staff are not usually part of a Thursday afternoon at The Dassett! However, we watched a fantastic demonstration of gymnastics skills from Commonwealth Athlete, Harry Owen, which left all of us in a state of wonderment and awe! We had all done our part by doing our sponsored minute of ‘spotty dogs’, press ups, leg drives and star jumps.
There was lots of cheering and clapping as children completed each event and if the size of smiles was anything to go by the afternoon was a huge success.
One of the aims of the event is to get 2012 children starting a new sports club by the time the Olympics starts - I already know of one pupil who is very keen to renew her gymnastics having been part of this event. Children will have had their sponsor sheet returned and now need to begin to collect their sponsor money and return it to school by Friday 18th May. Children will receive their postcards and posters as soon as we have them sent to us.
Many thanks for your support for this event.
