  • Healthy Snack Shop

    Wed 19 Nov 2014

We are delighted to announce that we have been successful in securing £1000 to set up and run a Key Stage 2 healthy snack shop through DHL. Mrs. Tracy Stratford, of DHL, spoke with the School Council about how we could use the money and some members of the council presented their ideas on a video that was shown in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style bid to the executives at DHL. They clearly did a superb job as our bid was selected and they have now asked children to think about a name and logo for this snack shop and the winner of this will get their idea turned into a reality by the team at DHL.

Our Year 6 pupils are also going to benefit from having some lessons about how businesses work – sourcing materials, creating prototypes, buying, selling, advertising and profit – as part of our link with DHL so that they are able to run the shop successfully.

What an amazing opportunity and an enormous well done to our School Council members!

  • Armistice Day

    Tue 11 Nov 2014

The 11th November 2014 is historical both due to it being the centenary of the start of World War 1 and the 70th anniversary of D-Day from World War 2.

The Dassett World War 1 Day was a huge success, with the children resplendent in their costumes. We had nurses and soldiers, pilots and land girls. It seems that The Dassett, being so rural, was also the destination for many evacuees from the cities and we all had a fantastic day. Children worked on poetry, heard about The Christmas Truce and football match from 1914, created many blood red poppies and thought about how to represent 888246, the number of British soldiers who died during World War 1, using poppies and proportion and they all observed the silence at 11am. The main theme was about why we need to remember the events that have happened in past and current wars to make a better present and future for us and our children. Children learnt about stories from Flanders Field and one child also brought in an air tank from a crashed Messerschmidt aircraft that his granddad found when he was a boy!

On the 10th we all participated in with a live video link of a national school assembly from The Tower of London, saw the spectacle of the ceramic poppies and stood in silence as the last post was played. It was all very moving and I am sure that all children will have a better understanding of what Armistice Day is about as a result of the events this year.

  • 4th Annual Dassett Arts Exhibition 'Africa'

    Sat 08 Nov 2014

“A Beautiful Exhibition – well presented. Worthy of the Birmingham Museum of Art Gallery”

Just one of many similarly glowing comments about the stunning ‘African’ Art on display at The 4th Annual Dassett Art Exhibition on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th November 2014.

Every single visitor was wowed by the spectacle of Year 3’s large scale artwork based on Maasai people, which faced the entrance to the exhibition, as they walked between 6ft shields and spears and past the gaping jaws of the Hippopotamus, to enter ‘Africa’. The vibrant and warm colours on every display and the huge array of skill demonstrated by the children delighted and amazed everyone who saw it. This year the exhibition was a feast not just for the eyes but also for the ears, as the rhythmic drumming of African Tribes accompanied the viewing, often with real life interaction from the children of The Dassett, many of whom took part in African drumming activities during the Arts Week.

Whether people were admiring the wonderful 3D hippopotamus, fabulous flying rainbow fish, superb tribal shields or marvellous and very scary tribal masks; zebra face sketches, musical rainsticks, Tinga Tinga Paintings from Tanzania or Mudcloth art from the Bamana People of Mali; Adinkra patterns from the Ashanti tribe in Ghana, camouflage maps, African flag maps, clay pots or 3D relief maps, every single item on display prompted discussion, awe and wonder about both this fabulous continent and its people and the huge talent on show by the pupils at our school. Many of the children accomplished more than they thought possible, with materials and techniques previously never experienced and this joy and sense of pride and achievement is what Arts Week is all about. There was sculpture, sketching, acrylic painting and watercolours of many different sizes. Printing using sponges and potatoes, modroc and plastic masks, sticking, cutting and chalks and collage to name but a few of the fantastic techniques the children developed to create the wonderful work on display. Video footage of the African dancing each child took part in, courtesy of The Friends, is in the Gallery section of the website, as are many photographs of the Exhibition. http://www.thedassettprimary.co.uk/gallery/

Parents commented that their children had not only had fun but learnt an enormous amount about the culture, traditions and geography of Africa as part of this celebration of the Arts. Every year we are blown away by this event and this year was no exception – what a fabulous way to spend time during cold, drizzly November by being transported to Africa.

Enormous thanks must go to all those who made the Arts Week and Exhibition possible – the staff, volunteer parents, Friends and  contributors of authentic artefacts – without whom it would never have happened and been the phenomenal success it was.   But, of course, the stars were the children – they worked together with such enthusiasm, joy, determination and collaboration during Arts Week it made it such a pleasure for all involved.

Plans are already afoot for the 2015 Arts Week  extravaganza and so, if you enjoyed this year’s exhibition, and feel that you would like to be involved in next year’s – be it helping with an activity during the week or setting up on the day – please let Mrs Hine know.

There will be one last chance for children to see the exhibition with their classmates on Monday morning before being dismantled. If you missed it and can pop in before school please do – before it is too late!

  • Safety on the Internet

    Thu 06 Nov 2014

As winter approaches and the nights draw in it is more than likely that your children will be spending extra time online – playing games or surfing the web, so making sure that they are safe is very important. Once a child sees something it cannot be unseen – this is certainly true on the internet which children can access through laptops, PCs and I-Pads. Please check that you have restrictions in place to filter what your children can or cannot access. This is easy to do and there is further advice and guidance on

www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/primary . Warwickshire Family Information Service have also produced a booklet providing advice for parents about online safety. The booklet has full details about how to set security and safety features and can be accessed here http://apps.warwickshire.gov.uk/api/documents/WCCC-859-93

  • Blessing the Peace Garden

    Wed 05 Nov 2014

It was a most idyllic autumnal setting. Nestled in the lea of the St. Peter & St. Clare Church, the leaves were golden, the school fields and Peace Garden  illuminated by a low sun peeking through hazy cloud, and the children of The Dassett school together with volunteers, helpers, designer, parents and staff all gathered to hear Bishop Christopher formally open and bless our Peace Garden.

It was a real morning of celebration with hymns, prayer and an unexpected blessing for all!

The worship group had planned all of the details of the ceremony and did an absolutely amazing job - each child was involved in leading prayers or reading poems and then Jamie (Y4) invited the Bishop to bless the garden.

The blessing asked the children to give thanks and praise for the beauty of trees and sky, the sound of wind and water,  the smell of flowers and cut grass,  the peace that this garden brings, the buildings, grounds and facilities we will enjoy, the friendships we share and the fun we have here, the learning and growing we do together, the way our school is at the heart of our community, all our teachers, governors, support staff and parents and for all our children and the children responded at each with, ‘We give God thanks and praise’.

The garden was then blessed with water and blessing with water was then extended to all those present, much to the delight of children and parents alike!

Headteacher, Mrs Hine, thanked Bishop Christopher and said that today was very much a celebration of the ‘birth’ of the garden as it would take time to grow and establish itself but that in future years, long after the children there have left the school, it would still be a potent symbol and reminder of what the Dassett is truly about –the children, their relationships with each other, with the church and with God.

This garden was built at virtually no cost to the school, but was a combination of goodwill and generosity from many, many local companies and individuals. Our thanks must go to Cherie Lebbon for designing the garden, parents for clearing the ground, the team from Jaguar Landrover for both their financial support and physical labours, all of our local contributors for all of their kind donations including CW Knight for gravel and to David Austin Roses for their extremely kind donation of 9 ‘Tranquility’ shrub roses.

We would also like to give our heartfelt thanks to Bishop Christopher for giving us his time today and coming and blessing our garden – it meant so much to all the children and is, I’m sure , something they will remember forever. Bishop Christopher then enjoyed a school lunch with the children from the Worship group before he had to leave us. Videos from the day can be found in the Gallery. http://www.thedassettprimary.co.uk/the-blessing-of-the-peace-garden-5th-november-2014/

It was a wonderful day and we all feel blessed.

  • Poetry Please

    Mon 03 Nov 2014

Roger McGough couldn’t have been more delighted than we are with our collection of prize poets. The competition was the Southam Lions 6th Annual Poetry Competition, and in a year when they received a record number of entries we are absolutely delighted to announce seven (yes seven) winners from The Dassett.

In Key Stage 1 First place went to Toby Y2 for Train to Dawlish, 2nd went to Zach Y2 for Seaside and Joint 3rd were Wilfred Y1 for Meerkat and Thomas Y2 for The Seaweed.

In Key Stage 2 Second place went to Kezia Y4 for The Romans and Me and joint 3rd went to Emily Hunt Y3 for The Hunt and Billy Y6 for I’m a Year Six child, get me out of Here.

They have all been invited, with their families, to an Awards Evening on the 14th November where they will receive book tokens and a copy of a book of all of this year’s poems, and they will have the opportunity to read their own poem. It promises to be a fabulous evening and they should all feel extremely proud to have done so well.

A display of all our winners work will be put up in school and a copy of the book will be available in the school library. Videos and original entries can be seen here:
