  • World War 1 Day and Blog

    Thu 25 Sep 2014

On November 11th we will be holding a World War 1 day at The Dassett as part of the Centenary of this key historical event. We wanted to let you know about a ‘real time’ blog of events that happened in Avon Dassett and the surrounding villages from the outbreak of war in 1914 until September 1915 which has been done by the Avon Dassett Local History Group. This WWI Project was launched in August and covers everyday life such as parish council meetings, births, marriages and deaths as well as reactions to the war and stories of some of the men from Avon Dassett who joined up. We will be looking to get the children involved throughout the year with this amazing project. It can be found here: http://ww1.avondassett.com.

We would love it if some of the children could follow it through the year. By now there is over a month of entries already published covering reactions to the outbreak of war, confusion over whether to cancel social events like fetes and shows etc. September saw the arrival of some Belgian school children evacuated to England. There are also debates about whether to continue hunting (they decide they will) and whether to continue Saturday football matches (the commentary is that the footballers should be signing up to fight). In November bonfires are banned on Guy Fawkes Day. As the year progresses, the community have to come to terms with a war that they were told would be over by Christmas.

Anyone is able to subscribe to the blog and leave comments, so if you were interested in a particular issue or debate (eg should football be banned during war time!) you could leave your own thoughts. The history group want to capture present day reactions to this centenary too.

They are also posting up a song from the ‘hit parade’ each month (starting with Good-bye Dolly Gray) and will be posting up some news footage too and so we hope that you will have a look at this fabulous, local resource.

Also, Year 4 and 5 children are invited to a WW1 morning at Carduss School on Saturday 11th October. The event is free and will have many activities to explore and understand the impact of the war. More info is available below:

To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, Carrdus School would like teachers and their Year 4 and 5 children with a particular interest in history, to share an exciting morning with us, finding out about the First World War.  Interested parents and grandparents are also welcome to stay.  The event is free of charge and is part of our History Outreach Programme.

The children will enjoy some fascinating activities including singing war songs, getting creative with flags, investigating the propaganda used to get everyone involved, and a tour of our fascinating displays.  It promises to be a very memorable morning and will help the children to understand the war and its impact on society as well as being fun.

Children should be brought to the front hall of the school, arriving any time after 9.00 am for a prompt 9.20am start.  The event will finish at 12.50pm and all the children will be provided with a drink and snack whilst they are here.  There will be a display room for parents and grandparents to browse through fascinating war time memorabilia whilst their children take part in the activities.

Below is the Parental Consent Form that we will need for each child on the day; if you could possibly send these to us in advance we would be very grateful.

Please see the Carrdus website www.carrdusschool.co.uk for directions to the school and feel free to call Fay Hand in the school office (01295 263733) if you require further details.

We very much hope that you will be able to attend, and ask that you RSVP by email to Fay Hand fhand@carrdusschool.co.uk

  • Celebrating Peace……..noisily!

    Thu 25 Sep 2014

We all stood out on the field, gazing into the sky today, hoping to spot the Vulcan XH558 on its flypast to Gaydon and, despite a long wait, we were not disappointed! This flypast was to mark not only the end of XH558’s Cold War Season and the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, but to honour those that served during that tense period in history and, particularly, the V-Force stations and aircraft that played a vital part in keeping the peace.

Our theme in Collective Worship this week has been Peace and this was a fabulous (if a bit noisy!) way of experiencing this for real. A video from a parent of the plane flying over is available at http://www.thedassettprimary.co.uk/gallery/

  • The Friends’ Canvas Bag Returns!

    Thu 18 Sep 2014

As Tim Minchin would have it: Just think about the world, And how the world would be fantastic, If we could get rid of all the plastic, We just need to get enthusiastic, Organize a competition gymnastic, Or a bag making comp at your school!

Yes – those fabulous personalised canvas bags from the Christmas Fayre 3 years ago are making a re-appearance. If you would like to surprise your family and friends with a canvas bag featuring a design by your child(ren) then you will find a template and order form in book bags today. Your child will need to get busy creating a design (suggested artwork could by family, seasons, hobbies, plants, sports etc.) to go onto the bag and this should be done on the reverse of the order form. Please follow the guidelines on how to get the best result. The finished results were stunning and of high quality and would make fabulous Christmas Presents at just £6 a bag. Designs must be returned to school by Wednesday 24th September to meet deadlines for production from the company and have them ready for collection at the Christmas Fayre. We will be providing Tuesday lunchtime as an extra opportunity for your child to do their design, in case they cannot be done at home before Wednesday.

    From The Friends'

    Design a canvas shopper!!

As part of our continued fund-raising efforts this term, The Friends have included a form and blank page in the book bags this week, for your child to create their very own work of art, which can be printed on to the front of a large Canvas Shopper bag.  Pictures can be created over the weekend at home or early next week in school. The bags are tough, fun and make fabulous Christmas presents, and to make Christmas shopping even easier, siblings can also submit designs from home to be made into bags!

Bags cost ₤6 each.  All orders and any sibling designs must be placed by Wednesday 24th September at the latest.

Please see below for further information and guidelines.

    Shopping bags

As part of our fundraising efforts for this term, the children have the opportunity of designing shopping bags.  The cloth bags are very sturdy and spacious (44 x 40cm) and washable. The bag is not a group effort.  The bag you order will be one designed by your child so makes a perfect present for everyone in the family – and they’re easy to post too!

Each bag costs £6 and is “manufactured to order”.  If you would like a bag designed by your child, please complete the order form at the bottom of the page and return it, along with their own design,to the school. Please mark it: Shopping bags, with payment by Wednesday 24th September at the latest for delivery in time for Christmas.

Siblings (and parents!) can make bags too!  If you have other children not at the school and would like them to make bags as well, please feel free to do a design and submit it, along with payment, by Wednesday 24th September at the latest.

Rules for sibling artwork: Use white A4 paper, portrait or landscape.  Use bright, bold colours – paints, felt tips, marbling inks.  Do not use pencils or crayons.  No glitter please.  Faint or wishy-washy colours do not work.  Write the designer’s name on the back AND the name and class of the child in the school.  Ensure that sibling artwork is kept flat when sent to the school

  • Nuts!

    Thu 18 Sep 2014

A few children have been bringing in cereal bars or alternative snacks for playtime. Snacks are provided in Key Stage 1 and in Key stage 2 should be a healthy snack of fruit, raw vegetables or bags of dried fruit, fruit stars, winders etc.

Please do not send in cereal bars which contain nuts. This is very important as we have some children with severe, life-threatening, allergies to nuts and many cereal bars contain nuts.

These allergies do not need the children to actively eat the nut. Most people with nut allergy react after contact with small amounts (less than one nut) and some people may react to trace amounts. This means that you don't always have to eat nuts to have a reaction. A few people are so sensitive to nut allergens that a tiny amount on their lips, or even standing next to someone eating peanuts, can be enough to start a reaction.

We cannot take this risk so we must have a No Nut policy to keep these children safe.

  • Reading Volunteers Needed

    Wed 17 Sep 2014

If any parents or grandparents can spare an hour a week, we would love you to come in to listen to pupils reading. It really does make such a difference, especially for our younger children.

All volunteers need to complete a CRB check before starting, but these are really easy and quick. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you are able to help.

  • Text Messaging Service

    Thu 11 Sep 2014

We have organised a text messaging service and will be using this to inform parents of any unforeseen circumstances such as school closures due to inclement weather, cancellations to events or after school clubs, changes in times for arrivals from school trips or residentials and so forth. We are able to securely transfer the mobile numbers you have already provided the school with onto this system. No outside agencies are involved and your number cannot be accessed by anyone other than the school. If you do not wish to be included in our text messaging service then please let Mrs. Hine know by Friday 19th September on hine.a@welearn365.com. This is an exciting move forward in our continued improvement in communication with parents.

  • New Curriculum Changes

    Wed 03 Sep 2014

All children from Year 1 to Year 6 will have brought a booklet home on Friday explaining the end of year expectations of the new curriculum for their year group. Some children will also find that they are working either above or below the expectations of their year group in literacy or numeracy, and will receive an additional booklet specifically at their level of need at a later date.

We thought you would find it helpful to have key information on the news curriculum and would ask you to keep this booklet in a safe place, as we will be referring to it at Parents’ Evenings and setting pupil targets from it.

Please remember that these are the end of year expectations – not what they should be doing now!
