  • The Dassett Music Festival

    Sat 27 Jun 2015

I am literally bursting with pride after seeing and listening to all of our fabulous performers at last night’s music festival. They were totally amazing! The night was balmy and the hall was packed and filled with anticipation and we were not disappointed!

The choir started the evening in style and performed 4 songs (Grandfather Clock, Edelweiss [Sound of Music], A dream is a wish your heart makes [Cinderella] and Naughty [Matilda] and sang beautifully. Our recorder group, made up of some of our younger pupils, played with confidence and showed that they are already demonstrating a talent for music. We then had performances from pupils in Year 2 to Year 6 on a variety of instruments – violins, flutes, drums, guitars, piano and saxophone – and the skill and confidence of all of our children was wonderful to see. The interval brought some much needed refreshment and an opportunity to cool off and our thanks to Michelle Brierley (one of our Governors) for helping with this. The children excelled in all areas and showed that their dedication to practising their instruments really pays off. Gail Bater (singing), Nathan Anderson-Barr (drums) and Lisa Foxwell (piano) were able to join us for the evening and their support was much appreciated. There were so many positive comments at the end of this evening and we will definitely be making this an annual event! It was truly a magical and musical extravaganza!

  • Rocket Seeds

    Fri 26 Jun 2015

    Blast off!

You may remember that we are registered to grow seeds that have been to space, well the RHS wanted to share some exciting news with you. They can now confirm that their rocket seeds are due to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 15:21pm BST (British Standard Time) this Sunday 28 June on the SpaceX-7 flight.

Assuming the launch time doesn’t change, you can watch coverage of the launch from 14:00pm via the NASA TV website here.http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/

Once the Dragon capsule (with the rocket seeds inside) gets into space and starts orbiting the Earth, it will take a couple of days to make sure that all of its components are working correctly, before then firing it’s engines a few times to change its orbit and catch up with the International Space Station (ISS).

The Dragon capsule will approach the station in a carefully choreographed space dance called ‘rendezvous’. The astronauts inside the space station will control the giant robotic arm, called Canadarm2, and grab, or ‘grapple’, the Dragon capsule. If the launch goes ahead on time, and there are no other problems, the capsule should arrive at the ISS on Tuesday 30 June, with coverage starting on NASA TV at 10:30am BST.

Once the capsule has been safely attached to the ISS, the crew will finally open the hatches between the ISS and the Dragon capsule on the same or following day to unload the cargo which includes their seeds!

Much of the footage will be made available on YouTube to watch after Sunday.

They will be tweeting about the launch from @RHSSchools so please join in the conversation.
    Also keep an eye on

  • Woodland Trust Poe–tree Competition

    Thu 04 Jun 2015

Did you know the following 10 words have become much less prominent in recent years? Acorn • Ash • Blackberry • Bluebell • Catkin • Chestnut • Conker • Fungus • Holly • Violet

The Woodland Trust would love children to write a poem including all of these words so they can help to bring them back into the lives of a new generation.

The poem – called 'A Trip to the Woods' - should show all the magical things about nature, and how woods and trees make you think and feel.

Children could pay a visit to some woods first so they really feel inspired, then get creating and see what they can come up with in 100 words, ensuring that each of the above ten words has been used at least once in the poem. If you wish to enter please e-mail your poem to hine.a@welearn365.com by Friday 12th June.
