Class Plan
Autumn 2025-26
Spring Term 2026
English
Our first text is the beautifully illustrated book 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret' by Brian Selznick. There will be lots of opportunities to progress our reading and writing skills during this unit. We'll focus on using evidence from the text to answer inference questions, making predictions for the next part of the story and summarising the different sections of the book. Our writing skills will focus on setting descriptions and character profiles before writing an alternative chapter.
After half-term, we will link our English to our Forzen Kingdoms topic by studying Shackleton's Journey by William Grill. We will write application letters to join the expedition and produce our own detailed maps of Antarctica which will document the great journey Shackleton and his team undertook between 1901 and 1904.
Our poetry unit is 'Animals of Africa'. This will focus on puns and wordplay. We'll look at a range of poems that use these and then have a go at writing a word play poem about an African animal.
Maths
Fractions will be our first focus. We'll learn about equivalent fractions including simplifying fractions and finding them on a number line. Children will learn to convert between improper and mixed numbers and vice versa. We'll compare and order fractions before moving onto adding and subtracting fractions, including those where one denominator is a multiple of the other and mixed number fractions. We'll then look at multiplication and division calculations involving fractions before finding fractions of amounts.
We'll cover decimals including looking at their place value and using this understanding to order and compare them. We'll then learn to round decimals. Our decimal work will also involve addition and subtraction calculations before multiplying and dividing decimals by integers.
In addition to our number work, we will be learning about statistics and measurement. Our statistics work will cover line graphs (including drawing and interpreting them), bar charts and reading and interpreting tables and timetables. We'll finish by looking at the mean. Measurement will involve looking at calculating area and perimeter. We'll use a range of shapes including rectangles, triangles and parallelograms.
Cornerstones (Geography)
Our project this term is 'Frozen Kingdoms' which has a geography focus and links with our science, art and DT. Children will be studying the characteristics and features of polar regions including where they are found, their key features and explaining polar day and night. We'll be looking at climate change in these regions and natural resources in these areas. We'll learn about indigenous people of the Arctic and expeditions people have made to the polar regions, including studying Shackleton's Endurance expedition. Children will also get the opportunity to ask questions to a real polar explorer.
Religious Education
In our RE studies this half-term we will be learning about what sort of King Jesus is. We will explore Christian and other world views stories and scripture describing Jesus. We will evaluate what made him different to other kings of the time before we evaluate our own views in order to explain what sort of king we feel he was. We will end the unit by writing our own version of the Lord's Prayer aimed at giving clear understanding to younger children.
We will then complete a short understanding Christianity unit- What makes God loving and Holy- we will think closely about what our ideal god might be like and evaluate views and qualities different gods show in different world views. We will then analyse different biblical stories and parables in order to identify ways in which God shows love.
Science
Our first section of learning is part of the Frozen Kingdoms project, which also covers our geography and history this term. In science lessons we will make links with our humanities learning to study classification of polar animals, including making classification keys. We'll look at how polar animals are adapted to polar environments using our research skills. We'll also carry out an enquiry into icebergs and what factors change the rate at which they melt.
After half term we will move onto our Electrical Circuits and Components project. We'll learn the recognised circuit symbols and draw circuits using these. We'll make a range of circuits and see how different components function. Children will carry out an enquiry into whether the voltage of cells impacts bulb brightness.
Art
To link into our Frozen Kingdoms learning our first project will be Inuit art. We will learn about Inuit artistic traditions and study work from Inuit artists. We will make our own animal soap carvings inspired by Inuit carvings and sculpture and use stencilling techniques to create our own piece inspired by The Enchanted Owl by Kenojuak Ashevak.
Our second art project will be Environmental Artists. We'll study key examples of this work before creating our own versions - a recycled montage and a piece raising awareness of ocean plastics.
Design and Technology
In our Engineer project we will learn about remarkable engineers and the bridges they designed. Will look at key features for building a successful bridge and then we will build our own bridge prototypes using paper before testing and evaluating.
PSHE
Following the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work we will first be looking at Dreams and Goals. We will investigate a range of jobs and careers, think about steps towards our dream jobs and look at the dreams and goals of young people in different cultures. To round this unit off we will think about supporting each other to achieve our goals.
Our second PSHE unit this term will be Healthy Me. We'll discuss smoking and alcohol, learn some emergency aid and finish by discussing body image and thinking about our relationship with food.
Modern Foreign Languages- French
Linking to our PSHE topic, we'll be completing a French unit of work on 'Jobs'. We'll talk about what jobs we'd like to do in the future and use the conditional tense. We'll talk about qualifications in French-speaking countries.
Our second unit this term will be 'Wild Animals'. We'll learn the key French vocabulary for wild animals and habitats. We'll talk about animals in French-speaking countries. We'll add some French words for the animals we have been looking at in our Frozen Kingdoms project.
PE
PE will be focusing on tag rugby. We'll look at throwing and catching skills. This will then be combined with movement around the pitch and game strategy.
We'll also be carrying on our dance sessions with Dani.
Music
We will begin by listening to Spring from Vivaldi's Four Seasons and compare with Sinfonia Cymru's Regenerate: Seasons for Change Project 3. Children will then create their own musical soundscape, using a climate change theme.
We'll then look at a classic sea shanty, Roll Alabama and use this to inspire our own compositions.
Computing
First this term we'll look at spreadsheets including using them for calculations, formulae, presenting data and solving real life problems.
We'll then move onto a coding unit looking at how to code efficiently, simulating a physical system, functions, strings, text variables and concatenation and user input.
Information to remember
Reading | Please bring completed reading records in on a Friday. House points and other prizes will be rewarded for those who read at least three times a week and record it. |
PE | PE is on a Thursday. Children will come to school in their PE kit. Please remember a black sweatshirt or hoodie as the majority of PE is outside. |
Spellings | Spellings will be set on a Friday using Spelling Frame. Children can take practice tests and assess their own understanding throughout the week online. Children will work on the taught spelling pattern throughout the week in their lessons. SpellingFrame should be used to support spelling at home. |
Homework | Will be set on TT Rockstars . Children will have six days to complete their tasks and again prizes and house points will be rewarded for effort. It is expected that children will work on their times tables at least three times per week. Knowledge of timetables is utterly crucial to all maths in Year 5 and 6 so this is really important to help mathematical understanding. Your child will also have a login for Mathletics where tasks will be set for them to try at home to support the work we are doing in class. |
